Taking a New Spin on Take-Out
Taking a New Spin on Take-Out
We get it. We don’t need to remind you that the coronavirus known as COVID-19 has interrupted our daily lives and disrupted our normal routines. As we all know, our friends and family in the restaurant industry have all taken a hit with the shelter in place orders across the country. At CartonXpress we know and love many families who own restaurants right here in the Bay Area and across the country.
Recently, we had the opportunity to help out one of our neighbors and good friends, the owners of Rubiano’s, a pizza restaurant with two locations in the Bay Area. Rubiano’s like many restaurants had to think and act quickly when their dine-in customers could no longer come in for a meal due to concerns over the coronavirus.
The owners, Ruben and Teresa DaSilva brainstormed a plan to create a Stay at Home Pizza Kit for families to make their own Rubiano’s pizzas in their own kitchens. The kits come with everything needed to make a personal pizza right down to the toppings and cheese. The one problem they had, was figuring out how to package the kits in a way that presented the ingredients in a fun, easy way without sacrificing the integrity of the ingredients when they were picked up (nobody likes to open a package of smashed cheese and deformed pizza dough). Rubiano’s also wanted to help spread the message that we are all in this together, and while the current situation isn’t ideal, one day we will all come together and enjoy a night out without masks.
Ruben and Teresa asked us to design a container that would fit their needs. The design team at CartonXpress went to work, and within a 24-hour period, created a carton and supplemental packaging that was on brand, was empathetic to the needs of its target customer and saved the pizza dough from looking like a mess. Rubiano’s had customers share their creations on social media. Some created home cooking videos, some held virtual pizza bake-off contests for the best-looking pizzas, and some customers were so excited they just baked the pizzas and then ordered more for family dinners the next week. The kits were a huge success, and we couldn’t be more proud and excited for our friends.
If you own a restaurant or food and beverage business and you are wondering how to pivot and shake things up during our Shelter in Place order (and beyond), shoot us an email or DM us on social media. We can help! In the meantime, take a look at this video and like and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. We appreciate the support!
